In response to the concerning trend of vaping among students, six public high schools in Peel Region have taken proactive measures to address the issue. Signs placed outside washroom doors serve as a warning to students considering vaping, alerting them to the presence of new detectors that monitor for vaping activity. Beyond their primary function, these detectors also serve a secondary role by monitoring washrooms for loud noises, providing real-time alerts to school principals in cases where a student may require assistance. While the implementation of these audio detection devices has sparked concerns about student privacy in traditionally private spaces, such as washrooms, the Peel District School Board emphasizes the importance of tackling the growing issue of vaping within school premises. Through the installation of these detectors, the board aims to address the challenges posed by vaping and ensure a safer environment for all students.
