When you leave cell coverage behind, on a hike, a ski day or a family camping trip, a good walkie talkie keeps your group talking without a data plan or a tower. Motorola’s consumer Talkabout line covers that need. This post focuses on the TALKABOUT T380 Series: the compact yellow T380 and blue T383.
If you’ve seen the lifestyle shot of a hiker with a navy radio clipped to her pack, that radio is the TALKABOUT T383 (the blue model in the T380 Series), not a T800.
What is the TALKABOUT T380 Series?
The T380 and T383 are pocket-sized, rugged consumer walkie talkies built for outdoor weather. They share the same internals; the difference is colour: yellow for the T380, blue for the T383. Both are IP54 weatherproof, offer up to 18 hours of battery life and work on FRS licence-free channels in Canada.
They sit in the broader Motorola Talkabout family at Wi-Com, the same line as models like the T270, T472 and T800, but the T380 Series is aimed at people who want something light enough to clip on and forget about.
Range you can plan around
Motorola rates the T380 Series like this under optimum, unobstructed line-of-sight conditions:
- Mountain to valley: up to 25 miles
- Open water: up to 6 miles
- Neighbourhood: up to 1 mile
Those figures are a best case. Actual range is usually lower once terrain, weather, electromagnetic interference and buildings get in the way. Pick a model with more rated range than you think you need for trees, hills and town use.
What’s inside the radios
- FRS licence free: no subscription or call charges
- Easy pairing so a group can match channel and privacy code at once
- iVOX/VOX hands-free (voice-activated with or without a headset)
- Weatherproof IP54: protected from splashing water from any direction
- NOAA weather channels and alerts (7 channels)
- 22 channels + 121 privacy codes
- Up to 18 hours of battery life
Why they work well outdoors
Pocket-sized and clip-on
You don’t need a bulky carry case. The T380 Series is light and discreet enough for a pocket, a belt clip or a backpack strap, the same way the blue T383 shows up in that hiking photo.
Unbox and go
FRS unlicensed frequencies mean you can get on the air without a radio licence for certified consumer Talkabout radios in Canada. They work with other radios on the same FRS/GMRS channels, and easy pairing cuts the time spent lining everyone up before you leave the trailhead.
Tough enough for weather
An IP54 rating covers dust and splashing water from any direction. Rain and snow on the trail are expected; submerging the radio is not.
NOAA without cell service
Tune into one of seven NOAA weather channels, or rely on weather alerts for incoming storms and dangerous conditions when your phone has no bars.
Hands-free when you need both hands
iVOX runs without a headset; VOX works with one. Your voice activates the microphone so you don’t have to press push-to-talk every time.
T380 vs T383
Same series, same features. Choose yellow (T380) for high visibility or blue (T383) if you prefer a darker pack-friendly look. At Wi-Com both are listed together on the T380 Series product page.
Where to get them in Canada
