Walkie Talkies – Motorola Talkabout Two-Way Radios

A walkie talkie is a handheld two-way radio: press the button to talk, let go to listen. No calls, no data plan and no cell towers, so your group stays in touch on the trail, at the cabin, on the ski hill or when the power goes out. Wi-Com carries Motorola Talkabout, the consumer line from the company that also builds our business radios.

How to choose

How to choose a walkie talkie

Four things decide which Talkabout radio is right for you.

Range

The range printed on the box is a best case over open ground or water. In forest, hills or town you will get much less, so choose a model with more range than you think you need.

Power and charging

Look at how you will charge on the go: USB charging (T210, T270), a charging tray (T472) or dual power that also runs on AA batteries, handy for spares on a long trip.

Weather protection

For rain, snow and splashes, pick an IPX4 radio (T472, T800) or the IP54 T482, which also keeps out dust. These are splash ratings, so keep the radios out of the water.

Channels and features

All Talkabout radios use the 22 FRS/GMRS channels. Privacy codes cut out chatter from other groups, but other people can still hear you. Add weather alerts, a flashlight or app messaging if you need them.

Walkie talkie or business radio?

When to step up to a business two-way radio

Talkabout radios are made for personal use: family, recreation and emergency kits. They are licence-free and ready out of the box, but every group shares the same 22 channels.

If your crew depends on radios every working day, such as on a job site, at an event, in security or in hospitality, a business two-way radio is the better tool. It runs on frequencies licensed to your organization, is programmed for your team, and is built for full shifts and hard use, with repeaters available to cover a larger area. Wi-Com sells, programs, rents and repairs business radios from Motorola, Kenwood and Icom.

FAQ

Walkie talkie questions

Still not sure? Ask us →

No, not for certified FRS/GMRS radios like Motorola Talkabout. Under ISED’s RSS-210 standard, FRS/GMRS radios are licence-exempt, as long as the radio is certified for Canada (look for the IC number on the label). Business radios on licensed frequencies are different and usually need a radio licence from ISED.
Our Talkabout models are rated at up to 25 km to 56 km, depending on the model. Those figures assume open, line-of-sight conditions. Trees, hills and buildings shorten the range a lot, so real-world range is usually much less than the box says.
Yes. Set both radios to the same channel and the same privacy code (or turn privacy codes off) and Talkabout radios can talk to other FRS/GMRS radios.
For family camping, the T270 has weather alerts and USB charging. The T265 is a hunting kit with earbuds and a carry case. For harsh weather, the IPX4 T472 or the app-connected T800 are good picks.
